People watching at the mall
For my Unit 1 project I've decided to do my analysis at the Hulen Mall. This seems appealing to me because at this mall there are all sorts of people from different social classes, backgrounds, and of course different races. They all come together to this one place to get their shopping done. I chose the mall because I think it will be interesting to see how all these different types of people interact with eachother. I pretty much just plan on sitting in the middle of the mall and watch and see what people do when they must interact with people that arn't similar to them. I expect there to be people who change the way they act when they address different types of people. For example, when a younger person interacts with an elderly person, I think the younger person with start treating the elder with respect and courtesy. But when they start talking with their friends again I expect them to ease up and start acting goofy or be funny. I'm a part of some of the target audience, which would be that of college students. I expect there to be some college students there but we are just a small percentage. I have pre-conceived ideas that maybe the younger, lower class people will act more disruptive or treat people with less respect (gang member looking people). However, I will treat all people without bias and just write down everything everyone does so I don't take sides with the people more similar with me.

The Hulen Mall should be a great place to observe, there will be many different social classes, and different races. What I don't understand is the part when you talk about having "pre-conceived ideas that maybe the younger, lower class people will act more disruptive or treat people with less respect". What is that all about...? Then you go on to say "gang member looking people"? Please, I would love to here your description of your so called gang member looking people. Lets see, I am young man. I am from the lower class. To top it off, I also have tattoos. Does that put me in your "gang member looking people category"? What you may not know if you saw me is, I attend TCU, as you do. I am a 4 year starter and a captain on the TCU Football team. And NO, I am not disruptive, and surely don't treat people with little respect. I am quite actually a very nice, quiet, calm, and reserved person. Ohh and I treat everyone with respect, >>> of course unless given a reason otherwise. So back to my question, what is your description of "gang member looking people"? But I am very interested in the conclusions you come to in your observations at the mall. Good Luck.
ReplyDeleteHey Jeff,
ReplyDeleteI think the mall will definitely give you a lot to talk about for your essay. There will be a ton of variety in the types of people you see, especially if you go at different times of day and days of the week. Maybe you could pay special attention to different displays that are out as you walk through the mall to give you more things to talk about rather than just the people and their interactions. Good luck with your assignment!
I too feel that the mall would be the best place for you to do your assignment. There will be many different types of races and social groups for you to examine. My question to you is how will you be able to pick out the lower class people from the middle class and upper class people? Do you look at how the person is dressed and label them that way? Im a football player and I mostly wear sweats and hoodies. So if you were to see me in the mall would you label me as lower class because of how I'm dressed? The point I'm trying to make is you can't judge someone based on how they look. (Ex. "Gang member looking people") I'm interested to know what conclusions you draw from your assignment. Good luck
ReplyDeleteJeff,
ReplyDeleteYou've chosen a great place for your analysis. The mall is a typical place for people-watching, which you may think about incorporating in your analysis. Also, it's good to sit in the middle of the mall, but you might want to move around and see other parts of the space-- maybe you'll see something new and exciting.
